Rough terracotta tile

Like an undercooked biscuit, this pot sherd’s cross section betrays its history, what happened in the transformative atmosphere of the kiln where it was baked. The porous material has sucked in carbon from the incinerated organic matter in the clay. This process formed a black stripe, hidden from external view.
