This is a centenary coin honouring Tomás Ó Cléirigh (Tom Clark), a revolutionary leader of the Irish Republican Brotherhood, one of the men who signed the proclamation, arguably responsible for the planning of the 1916 Easter Rising, the first attempt to use violence to bring about a republic of Ireland after several political moves had failed. He was subsequently executed for his part in the rising by the English. The coin reminds me of the knotty threads of history and wide skeins of community that weave together the fabric of East London.
